Lingo — a gamified skill-learning app

Duolingo's streak-and-XP loop, rebuilt for any skill instead of just languages.

A gamified learning app inspired by Duolingo's mechanics: streaks, XP, daily lessons. Adapted for any skill, not just languages.

The problem

Duolingo cracked the hardest part of learning, which is getting people to show up every day. Streaks, XP, and small daily lessons do more for retention than any clever content ever does. But that loop is locked to languages. I wanted to see what it looks like pointed at any skill, where the same daily-habit machinery carries something other than vocabulary.

What I built

Lingo takes the Duolingo loop, daily lessons, streaks, and XP, and adapts it so the subject can be anything. The bet is that the mechanics, not the content, are what keep people coming back, so the structure stays the same while the topic is free to change.

How it works

Built in Next.js. The gamification layer is the core: streak tracking, an XP system, and bite-sized daily lessons designed to be finished in a single sitting. The same loop that makes a language app sticky is what drives engagement here, just decoupled from languages.

Outcome

Live. It's a working build of the daily-habit loop applied beyond languages, and a proof that the mechanics travel. The question it set out to answer is whether streaks and XP keep people returning to a non-language subject. That's the thing worth watching, not a launch number.
